Learn how to connect FMX to an AI assistant like Claude or ChatGPT so you can find, create and update FMX records just by asking.

EARLY ACCESS: This feature hasn't been rolled out to all FMX customers yet. Early access features are still in testing, so you may run into bugs, missing functionality or unexpected behavior, and some details may change before the general release. Review any changes the assistant makes in FMX, especially to important records. To learn more or find out if your organization can get access, reach out to your FMX account owner.

Summary

FMX has an MCP server that lets AI assistants work with your FMX account. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that AI apps use to connect to other software. Our current MCP has all the functionality of our current API and knowledge on our support article data.

The assistant signs in as you, so it can only see and do what your FMX account is allowed to see and do. Once FMX is connected, you can ask your AI assistant things like…

  • "Create a Painting request for each of these 12 classrooms in the Main Building, due before the first day of school, and assign them all to Taylor."
  • "Jordan is out next week. Reassign all of Jordan's open requests to Alex and add a comment on each one so the requesters know who's handling it."
  • "Which rooftop units should we replace first, based on age, condition and what we've spent maintaining them compared to their replacement value?"
  • "Tomorrow is a snow day. Cancel every event scheduled in our buildings tomorrow, and keep the rest of each series."
  • "Which buildings had the biggest jump in electric bills this year compared to last year, and which utility accounts are behind the increase?"

You can see additional use cases for each module in the sections below.

Setup Instructions

Connecting FMX to your AI app takes just a few minutes.

Step 1: Open Your AI App's Connector Settings

Every AI app has its own menus, but the steps follow the same general pattern.

  • Open your AI app's settings.
  • Find the area for connectors, apps, plugins or MCP servers.
  • Choose the option to add a custom connector or custom MCP server.

Below are the current step-by-step instructions for setting up a custom MCP connection for common AI assitants.

AI App How To Add A Connector
Claude (web and desktop) Get started with custom connectors using remote MCP
Claude Code Connect Claude Code to tools via MCP
ChatGPT Developer mode and MCP apps in ChatGPT
Cursor Model Context Protocol (MCP)
VS Code with GitHub Copilot Add and manage MCP servers in VS Code
Gemini CLI MCP servers with Gemini CLI
Grok Connectors
Mistral Le Chat Configuring a custom connector
Microsoft Copilot Studio Connect your agent to an existing MCP server

NOTE: On some business or enterprise plans, only an admin can add a custom connector. If you don't see the option, ask the person who manages your AI app to add FMX. After that, each person connects with their own FMX account.

Step 2: Enter The FMX Connection Details

Every AI app uses the same details to connect to FMX. Copy each setting from this table into your app, then save the connector and connect.

Setting What To Enter
Name FMX
Server URL https://mcp.iris.gofmx.com/mcp/tools/mcp
Authentication OAuth or simply "sign in"
Client ID and client secret Leave blank

NOTE: You don't need an API key. If your app asks for one, or for a client ID or secret, leave those fields empty. FMX sets this up automatically when you sign in.

Step 3: Sign In To FMX

After you connect, your app opens an FMX sign-in page. Here, you'll enter your hostname, which is the first part of the web address you use for FMX.

For example, if you sign in at abc-org.gofmx.com, your hostname is abc-org.

Then sign in to FMX as you normally do and approve access when FMX asks.

Step 4: Turn On FMX In A Chat

After you sign in, FMX will need to be switched on in the chat. Sometimes this happens automatically. If not, follow these steps:

  • Start a new chat in your AI app.
  • Open the tools or connectors menu near the message box.
  • Toggle on FMX.

What You Can Do With FMX

FMX’s MCP supports all the actions available in our API, as well as ask about FMX functionality. The assistant acts as your FMX user, so everything below is limited by your FMX permissions. If you can't do something in FMX, the assistant can't do it for you either.

Below you will find a series of table showing what the assistant can do in that area, as well as some suggested prompts to try, as of October 2026.

  • ✓ Supported means it works as described.
  • ! Partial means it works with limits, and the Notes column explains them.
  • ✗ Not supported means you'll need to do it in FMX.

NOTE: FMX adds new capabilities regularly. For the latest functionality and limitations, ask your AI assistant "What can I do with FMX right now?" It checks the current FMX capabilities directly, so its answer is always up to date.

  • Describe what you want in plain language: You don't need to know FMX field names, IDs or menus. Describe what you want the way you'd ask a coworker, and the assistant finds the right records.
  • Work on many records at once: The assistant is at its best with bulk work. Ask for a summary across hundreds of records, or make the same change 100s of records in one request.

FAQ And Troubleshooting

Which AI apps work with FMX?

  • Any app in the table above works. Most other apps that support remote MCP servers with OAuth sign-in will work too. If you're not sure about your app, check its help center for "custom connector" or "MCP server."

Do I need an API key?

  • No. You sign in with your normal FMX account.

Can the assistant see everything in FMX?

  • No. It only sees what your FMX account can see.

Where does my data go?

  • When you use FMX through an AI app, the information the assistant reads is shared with that AI provider under your agreement with them. Check your AI app's privacy settings and your organization's policies before you connect.

What if I can't find where to add a custom connector?

  • Your plan may require an admin to add it. Check your app's guide in the table above.

What if I see "Please enter a valid hostname"?

  • Enter only the first part of your FMX address, like springfield. Don't include .gofmx.com or the full URL.

What if the app can't connect, or shows "401" or "unauthorized"?

  • Check that the server URL ends in /mcp/tools/mcp, then disconnect and connect again.

Why doesn't the assistant use FMX even though it's connected?

  • Make sure FMX is turned on for the current chat, and start a new chat after connecting.

Why did FMX stop working after it worked before?

  • Your sign-in may have expired. Disconnect and connect FMX again.

Why does the assistant say I don't have permission?

  • The assistant has the same access as your FMX account. Ask your FMX administrator if you need more access.
  • If you can normally do this in FMX, the record may not be ready for that step yet. For example, a request can't be resolved while one of its subrequests is still open or while it's blocked by another request, and a purchase order can't receive a shipment until it's fully paid. Ask the assistant "What can I do with this record right now?" to see which actions are available.

Why does it say a building is invalid when I try to book an event?

  • Your FMX role may only let you create events in your accessible buildings, and that building isn't on your list. Ask your FMX administrator to add the building to your account or to let your role create events in any building.

What if I get an "unexpected error" every time I create a certain kind of record?

  • This is often caused by a custom field formula on that form, for example a calculated field that refers to a field that has since been renamed or deleted. Ask your FMX administrator to review the calculated custom fields for that request type and fix or remove the broken formula. The same form may still work in FMX itself, because FMX calculates formulas in your browser.

Why does the assistant say a change worked, but I don't see it?

  • Ask the assistant to look the record up again. Some changes, like edits to custom field settings, can take a minute to appear everywhere.

Why did a search return far more records than I expected?

  • The assistant may have used a filter value FMX didn't recognize, such as a misspelled status, and FMX ignored it. Ask the assistant to recheck the filter and compare the count to what you expect.
